The Indian Embassy in Japan marked the 11th International Day of Yoga with a grand celebration in Tokyo, drawing participation from over 2,000 yoga enthusiasts, including dignitaries, diplomats, and members of the Indian diaspora.
The event was inaugurated by Yoshiko Ishiba, wife of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who also participated in a yoga session. Joining her was Satoko Iwaya, wife of Japan’s Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, further highlighting the importance of the occasion in Japan’s diplomatic circles.
India’s Ambassador to Japan, Sibi George, addressed the gathering and appreciated the growing enthusiasm for yoga in Japan. The event was attended by several senior government officials, resident ambassadors, diplomats, and spiritual leaders including Reverend Myoken Hayama and Reverend Tomohiro Kimura of Tsukiji Hongwanji temple.
The Indian Embassy in Japan shared moments from the event on X, stating: “Glimpses of the 11th International Day of Yoga 2025 in Tokyo! Inaugurated by Madam Yoshiko Ishiba, spouse of the Hon’ble PM of Japan. Occasion was graced by Madam Satoko Iwaya… Ambassador @AmbSibiGeorge addressed the gathering of over two thousand yoga enthusiasts.”
Celebrated annually on June 21, the International Day of Yoga promotes physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The 2025 theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” underscores the deep connection between individual wellness and planetary health.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who proposed the observance of Yoga Day at the United Nations in 2014, also participated in a large-scale yoga session in Visakhapatnam, India, this year. His initiative received global support, with a record 175 countries endorsing the UN resolution to establish June 21 as International Yoga Day.
The celebration in Tokyo reflected the deepening cultural ties between India and Japan and the growing global acceptance of yoga as a practice that unites humanity in health, harmony, and sustainability.
